Tata Power and IIT Bombay Partner to Scale Clean Energy Innovations

The partnership targets commercialization of next-generation energy technologies across smart grids, storage, electric mobility, AI-driven power systems, and carbon capture. For India watchers, the deal is a concrete mechanism for converting academic output into deployable infrastructure.

Scope of the Collaboration

The agreement spans nine technical domains: smart grids, power electronics, energy storage, electric mobility, cybersecurity, AI for power systems, digital grid technologies, carbon capture, and circular economy. The breadth indicates a deliberate effort to cover the full stack of modern power systems rather than narrow specialization.

Signed at the IIT Bombay campus by Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Power, and Prof. Shrikrishna V. Kulkarni, Dean of Research and Development at IIT Bombay, the MRA formalizes a long-term structure for moving prototypes through Tata Power's deployment channels. Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, was present at the signing.

What the Leaders Are Saying

Dr. Praveer Sinha stated that the partnership aims to combine "IIT Bombay's cutting-edge research with Tata Power's experience in deploying solutions at scale" to "harness innovation and technology for the next generation of India's power sector." He added that the collaboration will accelerate the development of future-ready energy technologies and contribute to a more resilient, secure, intelligent, and sustainable power ecosystem.

Prof. Shireesh Kedare emphasized that "India's energy transition requires not only advances in scientific research, but also the ability to translate those advances into reliable, scalable, and relevant technologies." He framed the partnership as aligning with IIT Bombay's mission to translate advanced laboratory research into deployable industry solutions.

What to Watch

The first concrete test will be project selection — which of the nine focus areas yields the first jointly funded pilot, and on what timeline. Industry observers will also track whether the partnership produces patentable intellectual property or simply deployment contracts. Beyond the technical work, scaling innovations from lab to market requires deliberate visibility and partner networks — a challenge that has reshaped how emerging technology projects approach strategic growth.

The agreement aligns with the Government of India's emphasis on industry-academia partnerships to accelerate research, innovation, and commercialization of technologies critical to the country's energy transition. Over the next 24 months, the partnership's measurable output will matter more than its announcement value.
