Over 350 threatened species to benefit from record investment

Natural England has announced a £60 million Species Recovery Programme investment, described by GOV.UK as the largest ever for recovering the country’s threatened wildlife. The money is set to back 130 projects covering 364 threatened species across England, from butterflies and crayfish to fungi, spiders, snails, sharks and seahorses.

A big shove for small, slippery, easily ignored wildlife

The headline number is chunky: £60 million for 364 threatened species. But the real story is in the spread. This is not just a poster-animal rescue package with a few photogenic wings slapped on the brochure. The programme names the swallowtail butterfly and white-clawed crayfish, and the wider list runs across birds, beetles, moths, mammals, spiders, snails, sharks and seahorses.

That matters because wildlife recovery is rarely one grand cinematic comeback. It is usually mucky, repetitive, local work: restoring habitat, moving species where appropriate, tracking tiny populations, and trying to stop rare things from blinking out while nobody is looking. GOV.UK says the programme sits within the government’s “Wild Again: Restoring England’s Wildlife” initiative, aimed at turning around declines in England’s wildlife.

The backdrop is stark but useful to say plainly: according to the announcement, wildlife populations have fallen by a third since 1970, and one in six species is at risk of extinction in Great Britain. That’s the mud we’re standing in. The encouraging bit is that this funding is aimed at actual recovery projects, not just another glossy lament about loss.

Dogs, DNA, crayfish and beetles: the toolbox gets interesting

The species list includes some properly odd and wonderful conservation challenges. The ghost orchid — so scarce it reportedly went unrecorded for 23 years before being rediscovered in 2009 — will be located using detection dogs and environmental DNA technology. That is the kind of sentence that makes a field naturalist spill their tea: noses, genetics and one of England’s rarest plants all in the same operation.

The northern dune tiger beetle, described in the announcement as one of England’s fastest declining insects, is also among the beneficiaries. So is the white-clawed crayfish, the UK’s only native crayfish, which is threatened by invasive species. The field gentian, one of England’s rarest plants, is on the list too.

There is also a captive-breeding and release angle. Native Species Recovery Hubs led by BIAZA zoos, aquariums and partners are expected to support breed-for-release work across the North and South of England. GOV.UK says this will support the recovery of 16 rare invertebrate species and help expand their range and abundance.

That is the wonky bit, but it is important. For some species, protecting a patch of habitat is not enough if populations are already too small, too isolated, or too vulnerable to bad luck. Carefully managed translocations and releases can be the ecological equivalent of giving a struggling population a rope ladder out of a pit.

Why farmers, walkers and garden-watchers should care

The programme also puts farmed landscapes in the frame. The announcement notes that these landscapes have seen some of the sharpest wildlife declines, while healthy ecosystems underpin productive, resilient agriculture. Some projects will support farmers and land managers to restore nature alongside food production, including work for pollinator species and habitats that can support crop yields.

For readers who want to do something more useful than sigh into a reusable coffee cup, this is the part to watch. Look for projects in your county. Check whether local reserves, farms, zoos, aquariums or conservation groups are involved. If public volunteering, citizen science surveys or habitat days open up, that is where enthusiasm can stop being decorative and start getting mud under its fingernails.

And keep an eye on the unglamorous species. The snail, the beetle, the moth, the crayfish lurking under a stone — these are not side characters. They are the little engines and warning lights of living systems. If this record investment helps them claw back ground, England’s wilder future gets a bit less theoretical and a lot more alive.
