Picture me clinging to the railing of a research vessel somewhere off the Queensland coast, jaw on the deck, staring at sonar images of a river that hasn't seen sunlight in seven thousand years. That's roughly the scene in Brisbane right now, where the RV Investigator has just rolled back into port after a 24-day mission that essentially time-travelled the southern Great Barrier Reef — and came home carrying proof that this seabed was once somebody's front yard.
According to CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, the voyage was led by the University of Queensland and co-designed from day one with the Darumbal Traditional Owners of Sea Country and their neighbours, the Woppaburra people. High-tech sonar mapped rivers, lakes, estuaries and ancient beaches now drowned under tens of metres of ocean. Twenty sediment cores were hauled up from the seabed to reconstruct what the climate, the vegetation and the water did back when those landscapes were dry land.
Why the old shoreline matters
Here's the bit that genuinely gave me goosebumps: First Nations people arrived in Australia more than 65,000 years ago, when sea levels sat roughly 80 metres lower than today. The entire Great Barrier Reef region was then a coastal plain backed by towering forests — the kind of country you could happily lose a weekend in. Voyage Chief Scientist Professor Helen Bostock from UQ said the new maps reveal that ancient terrain in stunning detail and help tell the story of the people who lived on it before the sea came knocking about seven millennia ago.
For the Darumbal and Woppaburra rangers aboard, this was never abstract geology. Land and Sea Country Ranger Nataliah Backo said the work gives her community a deeper connection to ancestors and to the stories held beneath the waves, while Tshinta Barney from the Woppaburra people described the voyage as a chance to weave Indigenous knowledge together with Western science on her own Sea Country. Those songlines — the pathways of knowledge linking sites and stories across Country — now have seafloor coordinates to match.
What happens to those cores next
The cores will be sliced, scanned and analysed for sediments and microfossils in a process called paleo-environmental reconstruction. The point isn't just to fill in a dusty chapter of natural history; it's to hand marine park managers and Traditional Owners sharper tools for protecting what's left of the reef as conditions keep shifting. Ancient coastlines, after all, make pretty solid baselines for measuring what modern warming is actually doing to a living reef.
I, for one, will never look at a calm blue patch of reef the same way again. Somewhere under that surface there's a riverbed, a campfire ring, a songline — and now, thanks to a crew of patient scientists and the people who've been minding that Country for 65,000 years, an actual map.
